Huggins Medal Presentation

Joseph A. Smith, M.D. and Paul Schellhammer, M.D.

Slide 1:

DR. SCHELLHAMMER: The awards committee is composed of the past president; the chairman, which is my position; the president-elect, Dr. Ian Thompson; a member of the executive committee, Dr. Gomella; and an individual appointed by the president, who this year is Dr. Richard Williams.

The committee reviews the information that is solicited from the membership for appropriate consideration, introduces its own ideas with regard to appropriate individuals, reviews the material, the CVs, and after doing so, presents their recommendation and slate to the president.

I now welcome Dr. Smith to the podium to present the Huggins Medal.

DR. SMITH: Thank you.

As Paul has just indicated, the society considers the Huggins Award to be its most prestigious honor. And it turns out that this year's honoree actually knew Dr. Huggins, so that creates a little bit of an additional twist on this year's award.

The considerations are those as Paul had mentioned. And this award really is intended to distinguish an individual who in himself, has had a distinguished career throughout in urologic cancer, and contributions, which have been made. And I don't think there is any question that this year's honoree, Dr. John Grayhack, is most deserving of this award, and the awards committee was very proud to be able to nominate Dr. Grayhack.

Dr. Grayhack spent his early years in training at Johns Hopkins University, and then went on to become known to many of us through his long and distinguished career at Northwestern as the chairman of the Department of Urology. Dr. Grayhack was also known to many of us through his many years of distinguished service as the editor of the Journal of Urology.

And he has been the recipient of many awards, but I suspect that one of the ones which he holds most closely is one which he recently received, because I think to many of us, the greatest recognition is one that comes from our peers or those closest to us.

And just this year the Chicago Urology Society I'm told has two named lectureships. Previously they had one in honor of the individual who founded the society, and this year they established a second named lectureship in honor of Dr. Grayhack. And I think that certainly is a testimony to the regard with which Dr. Grayhack is held by his peers, and those closest to him.

He has made numerous contributions through the years to urologic cancer and the study of prostatic diseases. Dr. Grayhack is going to share some of that with us today with his lecture, which he has entitled, and I think this should make for a great Huggins lecture, "Prostate Disease/Urologic Oncology: Personal Experiences and Random Thoughts in a Half Century of Involvement."

So, Dr. Grayhack, on behalf of the Society of Urologic Oncology, welcome and congratulations.
