I
would just like to introduce the two people who are going to be
doing this vicious debate. Dr. Flanigan was the principal investigator
for the Southwest Oncology Group protocol that showed that resection
of the primary tumor in patients with metastatic disease who were
also treated with interferon had better overall survival than
those patients who received interferon alone (without nephrectomy).
Dr. Dreicer
from the Cleveland Clinic is going to take the opposite view,
and perhaps shed some light on why we should not be doing a nephrectomy
in all patients with metastatic disease. And then we'll have a
panel discussion to hash out what the real truth is.
Bob.
