Meeting Summary
The first SOTS meeting on ovarian cancer convened investigators from a variety of disciplines in gynecologic cancer research. The meeting produced many recommendations for further research efforts in histology, phase II trial design, intraperitoneal therapy, genomics/proteomics, accrual to phase I and II trials, and molecular targets. Discussion points included the creation of new links between patients and open trials, the need for additional phase II trial development from the GOG Rare Tumor Working Group and Gynecologic Cancer Intergroup, a prioritization of translational endpoints, opening phase II trials on CTSU, greater use of the CIRB, and a review of the current thinking on CA 125. Recurrent themes were the need for new multi-disciplinary Working Groups focusing on recruitment issues, trial design, and genomics/proteomics, endpoints in phase III ovarian cancer trials, and the implications of the upcoming NCI Clinical Announcement on intraperitoneal therapy. Overarching recommendations included the need for more interdisciplinary collaboration between NCI, SPOREs, Cooperative Groups, and industry, and increased recruitment across all phases of ovarian trials.
