Welcoming Remarks

Beth Karlan , M.D. (Cedars-Sinai Medical, U. of CA - LA, Seattle SPORE)

Slide 1:

DR. TRIMBLE: Our next speaker is Dr. Beth Karlan, who is the president of the Society of Gynecologic Oncologists.

DR. KARLAN: Thank you, Ted. I want to add my welcome to everyone, and SGO would like to thank the NCI for holding this very timely and important meeting.

SGO is very concerned about the NCI having sufficient resources it needs to further the translational research agenda in ovarian cancer.

In fact, yesterday Carol Brown, the SGO's director of government relations and myself, spent the day on Capitol Hill educating members of congress about the need for increased funding for ovarian cancer, to enable NCI, GOG and all of our collaborative partners to further the agenda and improve outcomes from ovarian cancer.

Overall, the responses were encouraging and they recognized, indeed, the importance of ovarian cancer as a significant concern, and to get more dollars into that, and we look forward to working with NCI to making that happen and to translating the findings and the discussions from today's meeting into reality for survivors and other women in America. Thank you.
